If you don't know what your goals are, don't fret, because we'll discuss this - and more.

#1 Why Do I Want to Learn A New Language?

questions to ask before learning a new language

Picture this: you launch into learning a new language with vigor. You’re excited and put in the hours. In week one you’re flying. Week two you continue putting in the hours. Come week three, you notice a dip in productivity. You're devoting less time to learning. Life gets in the way. You start losing motivation. By week four, you’re putting in minimal effort. Eventually, you quit altogether. Sound familiar? Can you have done something to prevent this?Imagine the same scenario, only this time you're clear on why you're learning the new language. For example, maybe you're going to Spain on an exchange program next year and want to communicate to natives. Or, perhaps, you're backpacking around the world and want to be able to connect with people? Regardless these are motivations to carry you through when you feel like quitting. The reality is that language learning isn’t easy. It’s hard work. When learning becomes difficult, we can overcome this by revisiting our motivations. I use this strategy with many things. For example, when I lose motivation to the gym, I remember why I started - to be fit, boost creativity, and to relax (after gyming of course). When I lose motivation to write I remind myself that I started writing to be my own boss.So why do you want to learn a new language? If it’s because it sounds like a “cool idea”, re-evaluate your motivations.Read:How to Learn Any Language in 3 Months

#3 What is My Preferred Learning Method?

Everyone learns differently. To ensure you make efficient use of your time it’s important to understand what learning method suits you.Do you prefer, audio, video, writing, or a combination of techniques? If you’re unsure, think back to college or school. How did you study best?

#4 What is My Budget?

How much money do you have for language learning? This will dictate what resources you can access. Given how accessible and cost-effective online language learning is, take solace in the fact that you won’t need a lot of money.

#5 What Resources Will I Use?

Your budget, learning method and goals dictate what resources you will use. Given the sheer number of online language resources choosing may prove difficult. The decision can be overwhelming.Pick a few resources to start, and add extra resources as you feel more confident. Also, if you want to read and watch videos, make sure you choose topics of interest, else you'll lose motivation. If you aren't interested in garage doors, don't bore yourself to death and read about garage doors. This is a surefire way to fail.Feeling a bit lost about what resources to choose? Try language learning apps for learning on the go and Rype for online tutoring. The next two questions: how fast you want to achieve your goals and how much time you have are linked.

#6 How Quickly Do I Want to Achieve My Goals?

Do you want to become conversational in 3 or 6 months? Do you want to take things slow or do you want to push yourself?I recommend setting a deadline. Setting deadlines makes it real and gives you something to work toward. It also prevents procrastination.I’ve found that if I give myself one hour or four, that's exactly how long I'll take. While setting yourself deadlines are important, set them taking into account how much time is available.

#7 How Much Time Do I Have Available?

Are you currently working a full-time job, a parent to young children, or still in school? These questions dictate how much time you have available. If you’re busy it’s important to create a schedule and stick to it. But, try to build your language learning around your lifestyle and not the other way round. For example, you can listen to podcasts on your way to work or use language learning apps when you have free time.Read: 12 Productivity Hacks to Learn a Language if You're Busy

#8 Do I Have Access to an Accountability Buddy?

Sometimes it’s difficult to maintain motivation even when your "why" is strong. That’s why having an accountability buddy is important. They’ll provide extra motivation when you feel like quitting. If you don’t have access to an accountability buddy right now, It’s okay, you can always get one in time. Don't let it be a hurdle. If all else fails, try Meetup, online forums and Facebook groups.
