In today’s free Spanish lesson we will teach you 10 common and useful Spanish phrases. You are likely to hear these very often from native speakers, and they will serve you well in a Spanish speaking country! These are diverse terms you can use with just about everyone and anyone.

It’s a great idea to start off learning Spanish with common and easy phrases like these, and then move on to more difficult ones. This helps you build momentum and create steady progress as you learn.

Though these are very common phrases, remember it is always important to research the customs and culture of a country before you visit. What might be friendly in one country, could be very rude in another!

If you have just started speaking Spanish, this phrase can be very useful when speaking to a native who is chatting your ear off!

¿Puede hablar más despacio por favor? = Could you speak more slowly please?

When saying goodbye to someone, whether you are stepping out of a taxi, or ending a phone conversation, the following phrase is a very common way to say your goodbyes:

Que le vaya bien = Hope that all goes well

If you want to make conversation with somebody but you don’t know quite what to say, you can always ask them the following question:

¿De dónde eres? = Where are you from?

And if you are just a beginner in Spanish, the answer to this question will hardly ever be too long!

The next phrase is a way of expressing that you will be gone for a short period of time:

Ahorita regreso = I’ll be right back

Interestingly, in English we say “I’ll see you soon,” but really there are two people involved when seeing each other. If you think about it, the Spanish phrase makes more sense:

Nos vemos pronto = We’ll see each other soon

The next phrase is indispensible at dinner parties and restaurants!

¡Buen provecho! = Bon appetite

If there is a conversation going on and you want to show the other person you are curious, just throw in this next phrase:

¿Por qué? = Why?

If you haven’t seen someone in a while you can tell them:

Te extraño = I miss you

And in the worst case scenario:

¿Y tú? ¿No me extrañas? = And you? You don’t miss me?

This phrase is useful if you would like to signify that you had nothing to do with something:

Me dijo eso = That’s what he/she told me

Our last phrase for today is useful for letting people know you are leaving:

Ya me voy = I’m leaving now

These are everyday, common and useful phrases you can use in Spanish! We’re sure you’ll enjoy them and will put them to good use in your next interaction. Nos vemos pronto!
