Vocabulary for Introducing Yourself in Spanish
The first thing to learn is how to ask somebody for their name. You do this by asking:¿Cómo te llamas? (What's your name?)Great! So, how do you respond when someone asks this? Well, there are actually three ways to choose from!
- Yo soy (Andrea). This means "I am (Andrea)". The word soy, meaning "am" is from the Spanish verb "to be", but we'll look at that in more depth further down this post.
- Me llamo (Andrea). This literally means "I call myself (Andrea)". It sounds kinda strange in English, but in Spanish it's perfectly natural.
- Mi nombre es (Andrea). This means "My name is (Andrea). Nombre is the word for "name"
Pronunciation tip: in Spanish, when you see a double 'l', like in me llamo, this sounds like the letter 'y' in English. In examples 1 and 3, you can really see the similarities between both languages. Easy, right? Let's move on to our grammar section.
