Spanish Netflix Shows: 6 Shows to Binge-Watch & Learn

Nowadays, it is much easier to learn a new language.

One of the most effective ways for you to learn Spanish is through Netflix shows.

There are many good series on Netflix that can help you achieve fluency or even just better understanding of the language.

You will be able to practice your listening comprehension and pick up on some new Spanish vocabulary—all while having a good time.

Before we dig in, it is worth noting that Netflix has a substitles function you can use. So always leverage that to get the most out of your watch time whether you want subtitles in English or Spanish.

With that in mind, if you are looking for something fun to watch in Spanish while still learning, look no further than these six Netflix original series (and movies).

6 Netflix Spanish Shows to Binge-Watch & Learn

La Casa de Papel

La Casa de Papel (Money Heist) is one of our favorite shows and the top Netflix TV show in the world. The show has performed so well for a reason: brilliant storytelling.

The story orbits around a plan plotted by a character named "El Profesor" (the professor) represented by Spanish actor Álvaro Morte.

El Profesor's plan consisted of trying to pull off two big heists in the Royal Mint of Spain and the Bank of Spain.

The professor worked on gathering a squad of criminals that are on the run from justice and convinced them to take part in his long-prepared operations.

He sold them on the idea of an exit plan that will help them end up in an offshore location after the heist has finished, away from the eyes of Spanish authorities and with enough resources to live a lavish lifestyle.

The first heist consisted of printing out billions of euros and escaping with €984 million. As for the second heist, the disguised robbers take hostages in the Bank of Spain and find their way to gold and state secrets.

So if you have been looking for a new Spanish Netflix show you can watch on a lazy Sunday, look no further.

We can't leave out the good old drug lords and cartels while we talk about Spanish shows, right?

El Chapo

El Chapo is the go-to Spanish crime series to watch. If you have been following the news in the last few years, you may have probably stumbled upon a few stories on the notorious Mexican cartel drug lord Joaquín Archivaldo Guzmán Loera (El Chapo).

As you may have already guessed, this drama show—El Chapo— narrates the rise and fall of the Mexican criminal. The series chronicles El Chapo's interactions with the even more notorious Pablo Escobar, his movement within the cartel, the governments' continuous manhunts, his arrests, and his escapes from prison.

Talking of drug lords, there is another Netflix show dedicated to the leader of the Colombian Medellín Cartel.

Pablo Escobar: El Patrón del Mal

Pablo Escobar: El Patrón del Mal is another must-watch Spanish crime series. We all have heard of Pablo Escobar's lavish lifestyle stories like how he burned $2m to keep his daughter warm. Well, that's not the full story.

Pablo Escobar started out as a petty thief, and slowly rose up to be the most notorious drug lord in history. The series —Pablo Escobar: El Patrón del Mal— illustrates the criminal's steps and life story.

You get to learn about many of the important interactions and conflicts he has faced over the years, as well as the logistics of drug smuggling in the American continent.

Elite

Back to Spain! Elite is a Spanish teen drama that revolves around three working-class students enrolled at a wealthy school with a scholarship.

The series does a great job of illustrating the identity conflicts and social dynamics in a high-class school and how it affects the students' lives.

The Spanish show is not 100% accurate when it comes to the credibility of the elite school life, however, it's easy to see how certain social hierarchies exist among high-class people and how they view individuals who come from different backgrounds.

Locked Up

What makes Locked Up special is that several of the award-winning actors from La Casa de Papel (the first series in this list) took part in the show.

Actress Najwa Nimri (who represented an investigator character in La Casa de Papel) does an amazing job as the main character of the show. She plays the story of a young, unsophisticated lady who had to adapt to a harsh new environment and learn how to play by the rules after she was manipulated into criminal activity by her boyfriend.

The series draws you in immediately, as throughout the story you are constantly asking yourself questions about how it all happened, and if there is a way the protagonist can get out of the mess she's in.

You are introduced to a boiling pot of stories, all interconnected by one character. And you can't help but wonder what's going to happen until the very end of the show.

The series spans a total of 5 seasons and 59 episodes, and you can expect a lot of action, suspense, and adrenaline rush throughout these episodes.

Las Chicas del Cable

Known in English as Cable Girls, the show is a masterpiece of historical drama. The show events take place in the 1920s. It illustrates how the lives of four young women have changed after they join a modern telecommunications company in Madrid.

The show highlights a very important transitional period in Spanish society when it comes to gender equality. It sheds light on the challenges of female workers' lives during the 1920s as it reveals how they were treated by society.

Conclusion

There you have it! You now have a full playlist of the best Spanish Netflix shows to learn while having fun binge-watching some of the best series in the world.

A few more shows that are worth noting are: Velvet Colección, El Hoyo, La Venganza de las Juanas, and Contratiempo.
